What is a balloon payment?
A balloon (or residual) payment is a large lump sum due at the end of some car finance and rent-to-own agreements, often 20–35% of the car’s price. It makes the monthly amount look lower, but if you can’t pay it at the end, you have to refinance or lose the car. YeboAuto has no balloon payments.
Example
| With a 30% balloon | No balloon | |
|---|---|---|
| Car price | R200,000 | R200,000 |
| Monthly amount | Lower | Higher |
| Due at the end | R60,000 | R0 |
A lower monthly amount with a R60,000 bill at the end is not cheaper; it only moves the cost.
What to do
Always ask: “What is the full price, including any final payment?” If the answer includes a balloon, plan how you’ll pay it now, or choose a deal without one. Use our contract checklist.
