E-hailing insurance explained

Updated 2 November 2026 · 4 min read

Short answer

Ordinary private car insurance usually excludes carrying passengers for money, so a claim during an Uber or Bolt trip can be rejected. E-hailing drivers need cover that includes paying passengers. On a rent-to-own deal, check whether this is included in the weekly amount and what the excess is.

What to check

  • Does the policy say it covers e-hailing / carrying passengers for reward?
  • What is the excess on accidents and theft?
  • Is there car hire or a courtesy car while yours is repaired?
  • Who is the insurer, and who pays: you or the provider?

All YeboAuto e-hailing cars include insurance that covers paying passengers, and if your car is in our workshop for more than 48 hours you get a courtesy car or that week free.

Questions drivers ask

Do Uber and Bolt insure me?

The platforms may offer limited trip cover for passengers, but you still need proper vehicle insurance that allows e-hailing. Check the details in your driver app.

What excess should I expect?

Ask in writing. A low excess matters because a claim can take your car, and your income, off the road.
