How to get a PrDP in South Africa
Apply for a PrDP at your local driving licence testing centre (DLTC). Bring your ID, driver’s licence, a medical certificate, proof of address, photos and a criminal record check (fingerprints). For passengers you need category P, usually from age 21. It is valid for 2 years. Processing often takes several weeks, so apply early.
What to take to the testing centre
- Your ID (or passport and permit) and driver’s licence
- A medical certificate completed by a doctor (on the official form)
- A criminal record check or fingerprints for the police clearance (ask your DLTC how they handle it)
- Proof of address
- ID photos (check whether your centre takes them)
- The application fee
Requirements and fees differ slightly between testing centres. Phone or check your centre’s website before you go.
Steps
- Get the medical certificate from a doctor.
- Do the police clearance. Some centres take fingerprints for you; others need a SAPS clearance certificate.
- Apply at your DLTC with all the documents and pay the fee.
- Wait for processing. It can take a few weeks, mostly because of the background check.
- Collect your PrDP and upload it in your Uber or Bolt Driver app.
You also need an operating licence
The PrDP is for you; the operating licence is for the car. Since August 2026 Gauteng has been impounding e-hailing cars without one. Read our PrDP and operating licence guide.
YeboAuto helps drivers with both while their car is being prepared. See e-hailing cars.
Questions drivers ask
How long is a PrDP valid?
A PrDP is valid for 24 months. Renew it before it expires; driving passengers with an expired PrDP can get your car impounded.
Which PrDP category do I need for Uber and Bolt?
Category P, for carrying passengers for reward.
Can I drive for Uber while my PrDP is processing?
No. You need a valid PrDP to carry paying passengers. Use the waiting time to sort out your car and app sign-up.
