Is rent-to-own worth it for Uber & Bolt drivers? The honest numbers (2026)

Updated 1 November 2026 · 7 min read

Short answer

It can be, if the deal passes three tests: you can see the full price upfront, there is no balloon payment at the end, and you still keep at least R1,500 a week after fuel, commission and the payment. A typical R4,000-a-week deal fails the last test: drivers keep about R165 a week.

What drivers actually pay

Most South African e-hailing drivers get their car in one of three ways:

Option Typical weekly cost (2026) Do you own it?
Weekly rental from a fleet owner R1,800–R3,500 Never
Rent-to-own (e-hailing) R2,500–R4,500 + deposit At the end of the term
Bank finance ~R1,500 + insurance Yes, if a bank approves you

Bank finance is the cheapest, but most drivers are turned down: no payslip, a thin credit record or a past default. That’s why rent-to-own exists.

The maths most deals hide

FleetCalc, an independent driver-earnings site, ran a typical week for a full-time Uber driver (55 hours, about R8,000 in fares) on a R4,000-a-week rent-to-own car:

Item Per week
Gross fares R8,000
Uber commission (25%) −R2,000
Fuel (~1,200 km) −R1,660
Rent-to-own payment −R4,000
Data & car wash −R175
Left for the driver ≈ R165

R165 a week is not a business. One bad week, one puncture or one roadblock and the payment is missed.

The rule of thumb: after fuel, commission and your vehicle payment, you should keep at least R1,500 a week. If a deal doesn’t leave you that, the weekly amount is too high for the car.

The 7 traps in rent-to-own contracts

  1. Balloon payment. R30,000–R50,000 due at the end. Miss it and the car can be taken back after years of payments.
  2. Kilometre caps. Many consumer rent-to-own cars allow ~3,000 km a month. A full-time driver does that in about 2.5 weeks.
  3. “No e-hailing” clauses. Some providers ban Uber and Bolt in the contract. Check before you sign.
  4. Paying for a car you can’t drive. If the car is at the workshop for weeks, does the debit order stop? Usually it doesn’t.
  5. Maintenance on you. Some contracts make you pay for tyres, services and repairs on a car you don’t own yet.
  6. No early settlement discount. Had a good year? Many contracts still charge the full term.
  7. Surprise fees. Admin fees, “insurance portions” and excess amounts that weren’t in the quote.

How YeboAuto does it differently

We built our deal around those seven traps: the full price on every car, no balloon, unlimited km for drivers, e-hailing insurance, a courtesy car or free week if your car is in our workshop for more than 48 hours, and settle early, pay less. See the e-hailing cars and check every number before you apply.

The 2-minute deal check

Before you sign anything, with anyone:

  1. Add it up: weekly amount × number of weeks + deposit + balloon.
  2. Ask: “Is that the final amount, including insurance and tracking?”
  3. Put your real weekly fares into the calculator and check you keep R1,500+.
  4. Ask for the contract in writing, not on WhatsApp, and read the clauses about workshops, kilometres and e-hailing.

Questions drivers ask

How much does it cost to rent a car for Uber in South Africa?

In 2026, plain weekly rental from a fleet owner costs about R1,800–R3,500 a week and you never own the car. Rent-to-own e-hailing cars cost about R2,500–R4,500 a week plus a deposit, and you can own the car at the end of the term (at YeboAuto, for a fixed R5,000).

Is it better to rent or rent-to-own for Uber?

If you plan to drive for more than a year, rent-to-own is usually better, as long as there is no large balloon payment and the total cost is shown upfront. Renting suits drivers who are testing e-hailing for a few months.

What should I check before signing a rent-to-own contract?

Check the total cost (weekly amount × weeks + deposit + any balloon), the kilometre limit, who pays for maintenance and insurance, what happens if the car is at the workshop, whether e-hailing is allowed, and whether you can settle early for less.
