Uber Eats driver requirements in South Africa

Updated 2 November 2026 · 4 min read

Short answer

To deliver for Uber Eats on a motorbike you need to be 18 or older, have a valid motorbike licence (code A1 or A), your ID or a permit that allows you to work, a smartphone, and a roadworthy, licensed and insured bike. You sign up in the Uber Driver app. No PrDP is normally needed for food delivery.

Checklist

  • 18 years or older
  • Valid motorbike licence (A1 for up to 125cc, A for bigger bikes)
  • SA ID, or passport with a permit that allows work
  • Smartphone with the Uber Driver app
  • A roadworthy, licensed motorbike with insurance and a delivery box
  • A bank account for payouts

No bike yet?

Most new riders rent from a fleet. The catch: you pay every week and never own the bike. With rent-to-own delivery bikes you get the box, helmet, crash bars, insurance and monthly service for one weekly amount, and after 18 months you can buy the bike for R500. See the delivery bike guide.

Questions drivers ask

Can I deliver for Uber Eats without a bike?

You need a vehicle to deliver. Many riders rent one or rent to own: YeboAuto delivery bikes start at R699 a week with a R995 deposit, and you can buy the bike for R500 after 18 months.

Can foreign nationals deliver for Uber Eats?

Only with a valid permit that allows you to work in South Africa and a licence that is valid here. Check the current document list in the app.

Do I need a learner’s or full licence?

Platforms generally require a full, valid motorbike licence. Check the app for the current rule.
