How does rent to own a car work in South Africa?

Updated 2 November 2026 · 6 min read

Short answer

With rent-to-own you pay a deposit and then a fixed weekly or monthly amount for an agreed term (usually 2–5 years). The provider owns the car during the term; at the end you have the option to buy it for a fixed price written into the agreement (R5,000 for a car at YeboAuto). Because it is a rental and not a loan, approval is based on your income and affordability, not only your credit record. It usually costs more than bank finance in total, so compare the full price.

How it works, step by step

  1. Check if you qualify. Usually income-based. Try our 60-second check.
  2. Choose a vehicle and term. The longer the term, the lower the weekly amount and the higher the total.
  3. Send documents: ID, licence, proof of address and bank statements.
  4. Pay the deposit and sign the agreement.
  5. Drive. Pay the fixed amount each week or month.
  6. Own it. At the end you can buy the car for a fixed price set on day one (R5,000 at YeboAuto), or hand it back.

What is usually included

Good deals include insurance, a tracker, the service plan and the licence disc in the weekly amount. Cheaper-looking deals often leave these out. See why “under R2,500 a month” adverts can mislead.

Questions drivers ask

Is rent to own the same as renting?

No. A normal rental ends with you returning the car. Rent-to-own ends with the car becoming yours.

Who owns the car during the contract?

The provider, until the last payment. That is why they can approve people banks decline.

Can I settle early?

It depends on the provider. At YeboAuto you can ask for an early buy-out quote at any time.
