Car rental deposit explained: is it refundable?

Updated 2 November 2026 · 4 min read

Short answer

A deposit on a normal car rental is a security deposit: it is held against damage, fines and fuel and released when you return the car in good order. A rent-to-own deposit is different: it is part of the price of the vehicle and is not refunded. A finance deposit lowers the amount you borrow from the bank.

Three kinds of deposit

The word “deposit” means different things depending on the deal. Before you pay, ask which kind it is.

Short-term car rental Rent to own Vehicle finance
What it is Security held against damage, fines and fuel Upfront part of the price of the vehicle Upfront part of the purchase price
Refunded? Yes, if you return the car in good order No No
What it changes Nothing in the daily rate Lowers the weekly amount Lowers the loan and the interest
How it is usually paid Held on a credit card Paid when you collect, after approval Paid to the dealer at purchase

Short-term rental: a security deposit

Daily and weekly rentals normally hold a security amount on your credit card. It covers things like the damage excess, traffic fines, tolls and a car returned without a full tank. If nothing is deducted, the hold is released after you return the car. Check the release time and the list of deductions in the rental terms. Monthly rentals often work the same way; see rent to own vs long-term car rental.

Rent to own: part of the price

With rent to own, the deposit is not held as security. It goes towards the vehicle and lowers what you pay each week. At YeboAuto the deposit is:

  • R995 on a delivery bike
  • From R7,500 on an e-hailing car
  • From R13,500 on an everyday car

Because it counts towards the price, it is not paid back at the end of the term. The full price on every vehicle includes it: deposit + weekly payments + the fixed buy price at the end (R5,000 for a car, R500 for a bike). For a full list, read how much deposit you need for rent to own.

Vehicle finance: less to borrow

With bank finance, the deposit is the part of the price you pay yourself. The bank lends you the rest, so a bigger deposit means a smaller loan and less interest. See rent to own vs vehicle finance for how the two compare.

Before you pay any deposit

  1. Get a written agreement first, and read it. Never pay a fee or deposit for a car you have not seen on paper.
  2. Ask in writing: is this refundable, and when?
  3. Check whether there is also a “start-up” or “admin” fee on top.
  4. Check the full price over the term, including any balloon payment.

Questions drivers ask

Is a rent-to-own deposit refundable?

Usually not. At YeboAuto the deposit is part of the price of your vehicle, so it counts towards ownership. It is not a security deposit that is paid back at the end.

Why does a rental company hold money on my credit card?

Short-term rental companies normally hold a security deposit to cover damage excess, traffic fines, tolls and fuel. Ask how much is held, for how long, and what can be deducted.

Is a rent-to-own deposit the same as a finance deposit?

No. A finance deposit reduces the loan, so you pay less interest. A rent-to-own deposit lowers the weekly rental amount. In both cases it is money you will not get back if you walk away.
